This has been asked by good few people in the past, to me personally and this person has asked a very important question with clarity. First of all:
We all are entrusted to a spiritual being called, angel by God, neither past relatives nor Jesus when we say guardian angel.
St. Jerome said, “How great is the dignity of the soul, since each one has from his birth an angel commissioned to guard it.”
The Old Testament understood of God’s angels as His ministers who carried out his commands, and who were at times given special commissions, regarding people and mundane affairs. Some other clear references in the OT: 2 Maccabees 3:25; 10:29; 11:6; 15:23.
Even little children have angels
But in the New Testament the doctrine is stated with greater precision.
- Angels are the intermediaries between God and man.
Jesus himself affirms this: “See that you despise not one of these little ones: for I say to you, that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 18:10). A twofold aspect of the doctrine is here put before us:
- even little children have guardian angels;
- these same angels do not lose the vision of God by the fact that they have a mission to fulfil on earth.
To mention some examples angel’s care: the angel who looked after Christ in the garden, and the angel who delivered St. Peter from prison.
This is the duty of the guardian angels; they are to lead us, if we call them, to the Kingdom of Heaven.
